چکیده

Traffic grooming, in which low-rate circuits are multiplexed onto wavelengths, with the goal of minimizing the number of add-drop multiplexers (ADMs) and wavelengths has received much research attention from the optical networking community in recent years. While previous work has considered various traffic models and network architectures, protection requirements of the circuits have not been considered. In this paper, we consider survivable traffic grooming, or grooming traffic which contains a mix of circuits that need protection and that do not need protection. We assume a unidirectional ring network with all-to-all symmetric traffic with t 1 circuits between each node pair, of which s require protection. As it turns out, survivable traffic grooming presents a significant tradeoff between the number of wavelengths and the number of ADMs, which is almost non-existent in non-survivable traffic grooming for this type of traffic. We explore this tradeoff for some specific cases in this paper. We also present some new results and solution methods for solving certain nonsurvivable traffic grooming problems.

School of Computer Science Literature Review and Survey (0360-510, Fall 2006) Heuristics for Traffic Grooming in WDM Optical Networks with Shared Path Protection

The emergence of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology has significantly increased the transmission capacity of a link in today's optical networks. In WDM networks, the bandwidth request of a traffic stream is usually much lower than the capacity of a wavelength. Traffic grooming can aggregate low-rate connections onto high-capacity optical fibers to make an efficient use of the ban...

Efficient Multipath Routing and Wavelength Allocation Using Traffic Grooming in Optical Wavelength Division Multiplexing Mesh Networks

In optical WDM mesh networks, traffic grooming is essential in order to utilize the bandwidth efficiently to minimize the cost and meet the user service requirement. By grooming traffic, it is possible to reduce the total cost of all Add drop multiplexer needed. Also for the high processing capability in a WDM network, the path should be capable of carrying the traffic without any failure. In t...

Traffic Grooming for Survivable WDM Networks – Dedicated Protection

This paper investigates the survivable traffic-grooming problem for optical mesh networks employing wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) and dedicated protection. We consider the dynamic-provisioning environment where a connection arrives at random, holds for a random amount of time, and then departs. A typical connection request may require bandwidth less than that of a wavelength, and it ma...
